Robert Grimes -"Quicker than the Eye"

Statement about new work: Robert Grimes is using the painting techniques he discovered with his previous cast relief pieces and applying them to his carved wood relief sculpture.  He has taken the concept of the “Shadow Box” and turned it around to be what he calls a “Light Box” with the construction building from the flat, painted background to as much as six inches in depth, layering his carved and painted wood pieces, not unlike a diorama.  By leaving the sides of the construction open, light penetrates the depths from all angles, creating a dramatic interplay between light and shadow.  This in turn gives the piece an organic, stereoscopic quality.
