Coeur d'Alene, ID – The Art Spirit Gallery is excited to announce the showcasing of renowned artist Jeffrey Downs, known simply as Downs, in their Elevated Gallery. The exhibition will feature his latest series, “Conversations in the Abstract,” which offers a deep exploration of abstract expression through his unique artistic lens.
Downs, now in his early 60s, has had a profound relationship with art, having learned from esteemed mentors such as Karl Benjamin and Frederick Hammersley during the mid-1980s. These experiences emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s vision in the art world. Downs articulates, "By speaking clearly in a non-object idiom, the goal is to make art that reflects modern-day life." His creative process involves layering spontaneous and random marks, sometimes fully obscured, to expose varying depths of color that convey the shifting moods present in his work.
The impetus for “Conversations In The Abstract” emerged following a stroke Downs experienced in 2015. This life-altering event reshaped his perception as an artist, sparking unusual and abstract conversations in his mind. He describes the task of translating these thoughts into paintings as a way to convey his aesthetic experiences positively. The resulting artworks are vibrant “visual conversations” that embody a sense of adventure, characterized by a dynamic collision of shapes and colors that create an essential surface tension, animating his abstracts and generating a visual debate.
Downs’ previous body of work, the “Manhattan Series,” reflects a time when he moved to New York in the mid-1970s, capturing the intense emotions surrounding fear, crime, and the stark beauty— or lack thereof— of the city. He sought to recreate the gritty energy and vibrant colors of that era, integrating these themes into his current abstractions.
With over 40 years of professional painting experience, Downs has exhibited both nationally and internationally. His works have been featured in group shows alongside notable artists such as Andre Miripolsky, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Karl Benjamin, and are included in private collections around the globe.
